








This red thread of the Halles will be the pretext for a beautiful walk linking the upper and lower towns via the ‘grimpettes’, these ageless paths that have always connected the two parts of the town of Laon.
A little history before you set off: having joined the League during the Wars of Religion at the end of the 16th century, Laon was besieged by Henry IV in the spring of 1594.
The town fell definitively into his hands at the end of July, and the King commissioned his engineer Jean Errard to build the present-day citadel, in place of two urban quarters at the eastern end of the upper town.
The very spacious double storey market hall that stood there was razed to the ground, signalling the death of the city's economic lungs...
