Le Pays d’Apt en Luberon offre une incroyable palette de couleurs. Aux verts multiples, ponctués d’ombres bleu-noir profondes, et aux blancs éclatants des calcaires, vient s’ajouter, presque avec insolence, la fulgurance des ocres. Entre Gargas, Roussillon, Villars, Rustrel ou encore Gignac, la nature et l’Homme ont composé, en notes de feu, une étrange symphonie. Tous les rouges, les jaunes d’or et de paille, jusqu’aux violets aux reflets indigo, nourrissent les interrogations presque alchimiques du passant émerveillé.

The ochre sands result from a deep chemical modification of green marine sands. About 100 million years ago, green sands emerged and were altered under a hot and humid climate which transformed into ochre sands. It is from these sands extracted in underground quarries or open-pit mines that ochre has been operated. Warning, sampling of ochre sands in the natural environment is prohibited!

Au cœur de cette forêt de pins, dans ces falaises aux couleurs chaudes et lumineuses, ont été creusées à la force des bras des ocriers plus de 40 km de galeries. Vestige monumental de l'exploitation de l'ocre, site unique et admirable, ce labyrinthe mystérieux est aujourd'hui protégé. Aux Mines de Bruoux, un parcours de 650 m a été aménagé en toute sécurité. Ces galeries impressionnantes, voûtées, en forme d’ogive ou même en plein cintre, jusqu’à 15 m de hauteur, forment une véritable cathédrale minérale : une plongée dans l’univers esthétique de l’ocre qui rend hommage au travail des ocriers, ces mineurs de la couleur.

Through washing, then decanting in large basins, to drying, crushing and baking, a large scale of natural pigment was made, with a variety of colours. Developed in the late 18th century, the industrial process for making ochre pigment reaches its high point in the 1920s. Today, the Société des Ocres de France still operates a quarry in Gargas and produces 1200 tons of ochre per year.

The Little Owl (also known as the Owl of Athena) is a cave-dwelling species needing to find holes in old trees and small rural buildings. During the renovation of the farm huts, it is necessary to either make as little noise as possible or to put a replacement nest box for the owl's reproduction.

Classé parmi les Plus Beaux Villages de France, Roussillon se distingue par les teintes chaudes de ses façades, déclinées en jaunes, oranges et rouges. C’est le seul village du Luberon où la pierre sèche ne domine pas : ici, c’est l’ocre qui façonne l’identité architecturale. Utilisée depuis la Préhistoire et exploitée dès l’époque romaine, l’ocre est devenue un véritable produit industriel à la fin du XVIIIe s., grâce au Roussillonnais Jean-Étienne Astier. Il eut l’idée de laver les sables ocreux pour en séparer le pigment naturel du sable, révélant ainsi la qualité exceptionnelle et la teinture inaltérable de l’ocre.

This agricultural valley with cherry trees, vineyards and orchards, is opened onto many hilltop villages which are strong calling points in the landscape. The exceptional presence of ochre in the form of richly coloured cliffs and structures with multicoloured coatings are the special features of this territory.

Make a detour through the landscaped viewpoint of Roussillon, a securing project carried out in 2015 by the Luberon RNP as part of the "Opération Grand Site" (Sustainable Tourism project). This way, you can enjoy the panoramas opening on ochreous cliffs and views of the village of Roussillon, proof of the ochre activity (coloured coated façades ...). Following the signage on site, you will be able to discover the origin of these colourful cliffs and ochre uses.

Classified site since 2002, the ochres of Apt are one of the largest deposits in the world. With a significant number of visitors and risks of degradation, the Massif des Ocres raises lots of questions. In 2010, working in tandem with local actors, an "Opération Grand Site" (sustainable Tourism project) was launched to implement a development project, good management and preservation of natural and landscape heritage but also cultural heritage in the hope of becoming a "Grand Site de France".

The Ochre Conservatory is established in the Mathieu factory. It is an old ochre factory which used to produce about 1000 tons of ochre per year between 1921 and 1963. The washing systems, the town oven and the mills have been restored in order to understand the different stages of ore processing, from extraction to shipping. Through visiting the site and the workshops, discover one of the finest jewels of the industrial ochre heritage, turned into a training centre on ochre and colour!

Le 17 novembre 2015, lors de la 38e Conférence générale de l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour les Sciences, la Culture et l’Education (UNESCO), les 195 États membres ont ratifié la mise en place d'un nouveau label : géoparc mondial UNESCO, afin de montrer l’importance accordée à la gestion globale de sites et de paysages géologiques exceptionnels. Il existe actuellement 229 Géoparcs mondiaux UNESCO répartis dans 50 pays dont 97 en Europe. Sept Géoparcs mondiaux UNESCO sont en France dont 2 en région Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur (Luberon et Haute-Provence). En tant que site d'intérêt minéral, l'écomusée de l'ocre à Roussillon fait partie de la soixantaine de géosites identifiés sur le territoire du Géoparc du Luberon, animé et piloté par le PNR Luberon.

With the Gard department, the Vaucluse department is the largest producer of table cherries. The "Burlat" and the "Bigarreau" (also known as the Royal Ann cherry) are the most cultivated varieties in the Luberon. You can consume while fresh in summer or enjoy the main speciality of Apt:: candied cherry. Apt produces more than 10000 tons of candied fruits annually.! Many fruits have been preserved there since the 14th century, a real know-how.! Today, Apt remains the world capital of candied fruit.
