PR 17 : Le bois des Bartes

Description

On the steep slopes of the Violon valley, you walk along the edge of the Planèze de Trizac, a vast basaltic flow that terminates the Cantalien volcano to the north-west.

In Gallo-Roman times, an Arverne settlement may have existed at Le Monteil. In 1892, along the road leading from Jalaniac to Le Monteil, 150m from the village, a necropolis was unearthed. It contained five earthen or glass funerary urns, offerings and a life-size statue in arkose, dated between the late 1st and 4th centuries. The figure depicted could be a magistrate.

Departure point: Moulin de Faussanges. From Monselie, follow signs for Arfeuilles, then Faussanges. The starting point is in a large bend before reaching the Faussanges mill.
Follow the path up to the edge of the wood.
