From Vauziron to La Chasserelle

Description

From the medieval town of Châteldon, with its 12th-century castle and old half-timbered houses, you move on to smiling countryside, planted with fruit trees and flowering shrubs, before descending into the wilder gorges of the Vauziron.

Reception complements

Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

1/ From the Châteldon war memorial parking lot. Take the D113 for 200 m, in the direction of Rongère-Montagne. On leaving Châteldon, turn left onto a path running alongside the château grounds. After a steep climb, you come to Chez Gironde (with views of the Livradois mountains, Limagne, Monts Dore and the Chaîne des Puys).

2/ At the crossroads in the hamlet, go straight on for 500 m (view of the Livradois mountains, Limagne, Dore mountains and the Puys range). Turn left at the fork. Follow the path to Croix-Vernet, then continue on the asphalt road that passes Chez-Tout-Seul.

3/ Turn left onto a dirt track. You'll skirt the plateau before passing the farms of Grand'Garde (view of the Vauziron valley and Bois-Noirs) and Brafumel.

4/ Leaving the track, turn left towards Chaussenoire and go straight down through the leafy woods (views of the Livradois mountains, Limagne, Monts Dore and the Chaîne des Puys). Turn left at the next intersection and continue downhill (view of the Vauziron valley and Bois-Noirs). Go downhill on the D63 (mineral springs), left to Châteldon.
