Following the course of the Strengbach, which carved out this valley, this route leads to the highest village in Alsace, Aubure, nestled at 800m. After passing through Fréland, the mountain roads end in the pretty medieval town of Kayserberg, from where the route continues through the vineyards to Ribeauvillé.
The Strengbach valley: In 1766, Philippe Steffan founded the valley's first textile factory. Numerous spinning mills were then set up, taking advantage of the river's motive power. Ribeauvillé's population rose from 4,541 in 1803 to 7,293 in 1841, making it the 4th largest town in the Haut-Rhin region.
Aubure: The highest village in Alsace, Aubure has been a farming and forestry village, but above all a tourist destination since the 19th century, with the development of sanatoriums, medical establishments specialized in the treatment of tuberculosis. Thanks to its microclimate, the site is ideal for treating lung diseases.
