The canalised Rhine ends at Beinheim, where it returns to its natural course. EuroVelo 15 takes you along the high-water mark through the Rhine forest to Lauterbourg, the eastern tip of Alsace. From Beinheim to Munchhausen, the banks of the Rhine are rich in unspoilt natural sites. The Beinheim heronry, with its fragile biotope, is particularly closely monitored. Munchhausen and the Sauer delta nature reserve form an astonishing landscape populated by migratory birds. The forest is unique in Europe, with ash, pedunculate oak and elm trees climbing up to thirty meters. From Lauterbourg, the route heads west along the Lauter Valley cycle route, which runs along the old railroad line to Wissembourg via the Hardt racecourse. A brief passage through the Cleebourg vineyards near Steinseltz and Riedseltz provides a bucolic incursion into the northern part of the Alsace Wine Route. The return journey to Beinheim takes in some very typical villages, notably Seebach, a welcoming white village with deep-rooted traditions. A visit to the Esch casemate, part of the Maginot Line in Hatten, is an interesting option before returning to Beinheim.
