Barme

Description

At the foot of the Dents Blanches, Barme is a bucolic alpine valley where placid herds of livestock graze in meadows strewn with erratic blocks of white limestone. Countless alpine creatures make their homes in the valley's steep, forested hillsides.

Grand Paradis - Barme - Sous la Dent - Grand-Paradis

From Grand Paradis, take the pedestrian path past Les Clous, along the river through the Champ de Barme and up the vertiginous trail called La Braye. It is a steep walk up, but the changing landscapes and breathtaking views are well worth the effort. Once on the plateau, walkers can admire a multitude of alpine flowers and the awe-inspiring spectacle of the Dents du Midi and the Dents Blanches mountains, soaring above the sunny valley. From Barme, walkers can continue up a trail to the place called Sous la Dent, which offers a lovely view over Champéry Village far below.

Good to know; two quaint mountain huts offer delicious local specialties to refresh and revitalize the intrepid hiker and cosy lodgings for overnight stays.

Cantine des Dents Blanches

This picturesque mountain inn nestled in the Barme Valley was originally an alpine farmhouse, built in 1906. Today it is a favourite stopping-place for nature and mountain lovers. The first time you discover Barme it's easy to think you're in Heaven. Starting from the place we call Grand Paradis, this bucolic alpine valley can be reached on foot or by car. By car, the narrow road winds several kilometres through thick forests and along steep mountainsides until, suddenly, there is a break in the trees and the valley appears, spread out below like an illustration right out of Heidi. Nestled in a sunny spot near a bubbling stream with the formidable Barme climbing rock at its back, the Cantine des Dents Blanches is a favourite stop for epicureans in search of local specialties, families out for a Sunday stroll and weary hikers on the Tour des Dents Blanches. We take pride in our homemade, locally-sourced cuisine, served up in the cosy dining room or on the large, sunny terrace. We specialise in traditional dishes, like fondue and croûte au fromage, and delicious homemade desserts. We also offer a large selection of delicious regional wines. For overnight stays, our simple refuge provides 1 dormitory with 15 beds and 1 dormitory with 5 beds. There is a loo and washbasin upstairs (cold water) and a hot shower on the ground floor (on request but with no extra charge).
