A granite stronghold at the gateway to the Montanhol region, the Sidobre de Ferrières embodies the turbulent history of the Huguenots. From huts to drinking troughs and low walls, the stones tell the story of the Sidobre of yesteryear. In Peyremourou, its wildest rocks rise up.
Religious turmoil
The Gijou Valley bears deep traces of the history of Protestantism, as evidenced by the museum in Ferrières. This is hardly surprising, given that Lacaune, the town further upstream, embraced the Reformation in 1551, becoming a stronghold of the Rohan faction until 1631. As for Vabre, it suffered the misfortune of having the dragoons’ headquarters established there during the ‘dragonnades’ that plunged the country into mourning. A monument erected at a place known as La Pierre Plantée commemorates the massacre of those attending a gathering in Saint-Jean-del-Fresch (1689). In the 16th century, Guillaume de Guilhot, Lord of Ferrières and a Calvinist leader, turned the castle into a stronghold of the Protestant faction. As punishment, the castle was subsequently turned into a state prison and then sold during the Revolution.
