From stonemasons to a sculpted landscape…
Packed with things to discover, this walk will take you in the footsteps of the ‘peiraires’ (traditional stonemasons).
Car park GPS coordinates: 43.611208, 2.399151
The walk begins at the site of the old Sidobre stone quarries, dating from before the advent of electricity. You will see the loading bays where ox-drawn carts used to come to load their cargo. You’ll also see the distinctive marks left by ‘cuhns’ – the tools used to prepare the rocks for cutting – some of which were abandoned because the stonemason, having gone off to war, never returned. At the ‘Croix des Carriers’, there’s a magnificent view over the Castraise plain and, on a clear day, as far as the Pyrenees.
As you wander along these paths lined with granite slabs, you’ll pass through beautiful beech woods, chestnut groves and other coniferous forests. And ever-present are these rocks and this sculpted landscape: the Anvil, the Trembling Rock of Lascombes, and so on. As you let your imagination wander, you’ll spot the ‘cow’ or the ‘shark’, and here and there small streams, marshy areas and undergrowth that keep the air pleasantly cool.
