Sentier de la serpentine

Cette église est un monument de style gothique datant du XIIIe siècle. L'édifice comporte une nef de trois travées de dimension remarquable avec un chevet plat éclairé par trois verrières. Les vitraux ont été réalisés par l'atelier des peintres-verriers de Feur de Bordeaux en 1879 et 1909.

Le sous-sol de la lande est constitué de serpentine, une roche peu acide contrairement au granit de la région. Cette roche, vieille de 300 millions d'année, formée au fond des océans présente l'aspect d'une peau de serpent. Les landes serpentinicoles représentent des écosystèmes très originaux et recèlent un patrimoine biologique d’une grande rareté.

Les bonnes fontaines des Cars, d’époque médiévale, étaient dites "miraculeuses". Le jour de l’Assomption, on se rendait en procession à ces fontaines. C’était un pèlerinage et lorsqu'une maladie se présentait (convulsion, rhumatisme...) on faisait boire de cette eau au malade.

The St Laurent moor has been designated as a site of major ecological interest at European level (Natura 2000 program). It is managed by the Conservatoire Régional des Espaces Naturels du Limousin and the Communauté de communes du pays de Saint-Yrieix, in partnership with the commune of La Roche l?Abeille. It is made up of serpentine, a low-acid rock unlike the region's granite. Its highly original ecosystems are home to a rare biological heritage. To discover it, follow the 4 km interpretation trail, which focuses on pastoralism. Sheep tracks guide visitors as they discover the natural and historical riches of the Lande. The trail is easy to follow.

The commune of La Roche l?Abeille is home to one of our department?s most remarkable natural sites. Of particular interest is the serpentine moor, a rock that appeared on the ocean floor 300 million years ago. This geological feature has a direct influence on the flora, which is of exceptional interest. It was therefore only natural that this exceptional site should be the focus of an educational program designed to bring the richness of the area to a wider public.
