From approximately 31st August to 20th November 2026, the access road to Grand-Paradis will be closed to all traffic due to turbining works. During this period, hikers wishing to reach the Galerie Défago are invited to park at the Champéry cable car car park. Safety notice: due to this closure, the Chemin des Journelles will exceptionally be used by authorised motor vehicles. Hikers are therefore advised to exercise care and courtesy on this stretch, which will temporarily be shared between pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

From approximately 31st August to 20th November 2026, the access road to Grand-Paradis will be closed to all traffic due to turbining works. During this period, the Cantine will remain accessible:

from Champéry: via the Route de Planachaux, then the Bretelle des Creuses
from Monthey/Choëx, Troistorrents or Val-d'Illiez: via the Route des Rives

Vehicles over 18 tonnes must use the Route des Rives from Monthey/Choëx.

This historic hiking trail is one of the region's most iconic itineraries.

Champéry - Galerie Défago - Les Rives - Grand-Paradis - Champéry

Visitors to Champéry are often intrigued by the sight of an enormous sign, painted right onto the sheer rock wall on the other side of the valley. The red and white sign signals the Galerie Défago, one of the loveliest and most unique walks around Champéry.

The trail follows a natural ledge over 600 m long, which has been carved out in places to create a continuous passage along the cliff facing the village. The Galerie offers some of the best views of Champéry and over the whole Val d’Illiez, with the soaring church steeples of Val d'Illiez and Troistorrents in the distance.

Large wildflowers from the Adenostyles family bloom and flourish here as well. Walkers with vertigo should be forewarned; despite the barriers that run the length of the path, the sheer cliff walls and valley floor far below make for some very impressive views. During the hottest summer days, the trail is at its best in the morning or early afternoon before 2 pm, when the gallery is in the shade and the village of Champéry is in the sun.

Good to know: You can return to the village from the Cantine des Rives on the little Dents du Midi tourist train (free shuttle).

The Galerie path is closed in the Winter.

Cantine des Rives

Offering panoramic views of Champéry from the clifftop opposite the village, the Cantine des Rives is one of the region's most popular alpine restaurants.Winter or summer, visitors will love the delicious cuisine and timeworn patina of this snug alpine chalet. Housed in what was once the barn, the large, welcoming dining room still retains elements of its rustic origins. Here, you will find the famous Raclette du Valais, melted to gooey deliciousness before a wood fire, or our speciality, the 'Tzeudron des Rives'. The Cantine des Rives is located at the end of the iconic Galerie Défago hike (open only in summer), not far from the Tière Via Ferrata. In summer, the Cantine is served by the charming Dents du Midi tourist train. In winter, the restaurant is the perfect place to stop and warm up on the Les Rives snowshoe hike.
