The Tour des Dents Blanches

The Tour des Dents Blanches
The Tour des Dents Blanches

Description

As rugged and challenging, and austerely beautiful as the untamed alpine landscape, this is our region’s 'other' iconic long-distance tour.

This multi-day tour is not for the faint-of-heart. Hikers should be surefooted and have a good notion of alpine hiking. Certain passages are equipped with chains and even ladders when the terrain is particularly tricky, and snow patches persist into late summer. It’s well worth the effort though, as the panoramas are otherworldly. Alpine huts provide rest and refreshment and a welcome night’s sleep along the way. Contact the local mountain guiding company if you don't feel confident setting out on your own.

The Tour des Dents Blanches association offers 3-day or 5-day packages departing from Barme (Champéry) with accommodation, evening meals, breakfasts and picnics.

Refuge de Bonavau

The Refuge de Bonaveau is a picturesque mountain refuge, perched on a bucolic alpine plateau between Grand Paradis and the Susanfe Valley.A cosy mountain hideaway, Brigitte's refuge is the first stop en route to some of our most spectacular local sites, from the Dents du Midi and Dents Blanches mountain ranges to the formidable Pas d'Encel passage and the airy Belle Etoile suspension bridge. Hardly a 'hut', Bonaveau is a lovely alpine chalet that appears like a mirage when you round the bend in the trail. The panorama is striking, with the chalet and its garden full of flowers standing out before the icy bulk of the Ruan Glacier in the background. Visitors seeking the restful simplicity of yesteryear are welcome to stay the night; three snug dormitories equipped with fluffy duvets offer 5, 6 and 7 places. If you're in need of a bite to eat, Bonaveau's kitchen serves traditional Valaisan specialties, cheese dishes, hearty omelettes, homemade soup and delectable fruit pies.

Cabane de Susanfe

Nestled snugly in the heart of the Susanfe Valley amongst impressive blocks of erratic granite, the iconic Cabane de Susanfe has been welcoming weary alpine hikers since 1932.The Tour des Dents du Midi, the Tour des Dents Blanches, the Tour du Ruan... These legendary multi-day alpine hikes all include a stop at the Cabane de Susanfe, a weathered and well-loved landmark set on a small promontory in the lush Susanfe Valley. For over 80 years, hikers have gathered here for rest and refuge. The sunny terrace is the perfect spot to stop for a moment and enjoy a cool drink, a homemade syrup or real Italian coffee. If you've worked up an appetite, you might stay a little longer for a restorative fondue, a hearty plate of rösti or mountain macaroni, or a platter of local specialties and fresh goat cheeses made by the local shepherds. Of course, the best way to experience the cabane is to stay the night, tucked under a soft duvet in a snug dormitory bed! Off-season, the cabin remains open but is not guarded. You will find basic equipment to get you through the night: dishes, a stove, wood (don't forget to bring matches and lighter!) and blankets. In winter, experienced mountaineers can reach the valley on touring skis. The caretaker will happily open the cabin for you; don't hesitate to contact her! Warning: always check ahead with the local mountain guide company 'Montagne Experience' to find out what the avalanche risk might be.
