Description

This iconic, historic long-distance alpine trail offers breathtaking panoramas, soaring summits, craggy passes, crystalline alpine lakes, glaciers, waterfalls, forests, and flora and fauna galore…

Discover the pioneer of Valais walking tours, the mythical Tour des Dents du Midi. Inaugurated in 1972, it owes its reputation to the marathon it ran for almost 40 years. The various gîtes along the way allow you to organize your stopovers as you wish, whether for accommodation, meals or refreshments.

This tour is suitable for hikers in good physical condition. It is also suitable for families. It can be completed in 2, 3 or 4 days from June to October, depending on snow conditions. Its many variants also allow you to extend your stay and climb its highest peak: Haute Cime (3,257 m).

There are several variations on the Tour des Dents du Midi route. However, you will pass by the following remarkable sites:

- The Salanfe dam and lake.
- The Col de Susanfe, the highest point (without the Haute Cime) of the hike at 2,494 metres above sea level.
- The Susanfe valley.
- Col du Jorat.
- Cirque de Chalin.
- Anthème lakes.
- Pas d'Encel (a steep, vertiginous passage equipped with chains).

Discover our hiking trails and itineraries around the Dents du Midi: over 800 kilometers of marked trails await you.

Cabane de Susanfe

Nestled snugly in the heart of the Susanfe Valley amongst impressive blocks of erratic granite, the iconic Cabane de Susanfe has been welcoming weary alpine hikers since 1932.The Tour des Dents du Midi, the Tour des Dents Blanches, the Tour du Ruan... These legendary multi-day alpine hikes all include a stop at the Cabane de Susanfe, a weathered and well-loved landmark set on a small promontory in the lush Susanfe Valley. For over 80 years, hikers have gathered here for rest and refuge. The sunny terrace is the perfect spot to stop for a moment and enjoy a cool drink, a homemade syrup or real Italian coffee. If you've worked up an appetite, you might stay a little longer for a restorative fondue, a hearty plate of rösti or mountain macaroni, or a platter of local specialties and fresh goat cheeses made by the local shepherds. Of course, the best way to experience the cabane is to stay the night, tucked under a soft duvet in a snug dormitory bed! Off-season, the cabin remains open but is not guarded. You will find basic equipment to get you through the night: dishes, a stove, wood (don't forget to bring matches and lighter!) and blankets. In winter, experienced mountaineers can reach the valley on touring skis. The caretaker will happily open the cabin for you; don't hesitate to contact her! Warning: always check ahead with the local mountain guide company 'Montagne Experience' to find out what the avalanche risk might be.
