Description

Despite its length, this route is easy, with little elevation gain. Watch out for mosquitoes along the banks of the Loire during the warmer months.

After following a section of the greenway linking Montrond-les-Bains to Bellegarde-en-Forez, the first half of the route continues across flat terrain along quiet country roads. A few stretches of unpaved track lead to Veauche. The route then follows the Way of St James to the right bank of the Loire, before finishing along a minor road at the foot of Montrond Castle.

Château de Montrond les Bains

Explore the fortress which inspired the Montrond-les-Bains spa resort. It protected the major thoroughfare that was the Loire ford from the top of its round basalt hill.It was built by the Forez counts using volcanic rock, pebbles from the Loire and some beautiful large stones. The impressive fortress mellowed in the Renaissance to become a residence. Visitors can soak up the atmosphere from the courtyard, post guarding the entrance court, the kitchens to the foundations, dungeon and patrol path. Forez Postal Museum, Renaissance Centre: children’s games, costumes etc...
