In 1871, as soon as Alsace and Moselle were annexed, the Germans decided to defend Metz. They completed the forts begun by the French, then built a series of forts to form a fortified belt around the city. From 1899, they built a second belt of forts called Festen (called Groupes Fortifiés after 1918 by the French).
This route runs alongside the Groupes Fortifiés de l'Aisnes and de l'Yser to the north, then makes a large loop through the villages to the south of these military works.
