Discover the Normandy coastline on this 194-kilometer walking itinerary from Honfleur in Calvados to Carentan in La Manche. Enjoy superb views of the Belle Epoque seaside villas of Trouville sur Mer, Houlgate, Hermanville sur Mer, Saint Aubin sur Mer... or tread the famous Deauville boards, not forgetting sensitive natural areas such as the Bois du Breuil near Honfleur's famous harbour, or the Falaises des Roches noires in Villerville. Nature discoveries, such as in the Bay of Orne or near Carentan, will delight you with the diversity of their flora and fauna. Little egrets here, grebes there or viperine and obione. There's something for everyone in Calvados, whether you're a lover of architecture, nature or the sea... not forgetting the gastronomy for which the region is renowned: oysters, scallops, cheeses or cider-based drinks, depending on the season and to be enjoyed in moderation, the hike isn't over...
If you're tempted, why not take the topoguide with you, where you'll find expert advice from the volunteers of the Comités départementaux de Randonnée Pédestre (departmental hiking committees), for a safe hike, as well as tourist information.
The tourist offices are always on hand to help you prepare your stopovers, and to encourage you to follow this itinerary.
On this page, you'll find the GPX tracks to help you on your way: the complete track, as well as its variants and off-GR® tracks, ensuring continuity of the itinerary at high tide.
You should check the tide times on the stretches along the beaches. Some sections can only be walked at low tide, as there are no protective dykes at the top of the beach. At high tide, the sea is at its highest level: depending on the tidal coefficient, it can cover the upper beach, making passage impossible. As a general rule, you shouldn't set foot on a beach for 2 hours before or after high tide, and this time should be increased during high tides. In this case, you should use the off-peak GR® or alternative routes. Please check tide times and coefficients (www.maree.shom.fr).
This hiking route is a continuation of the GR® 21, which starts in Le Tréport and runs to Le Havre in the Seine-Maritime region. The Pont de Normandie can be crossed by bus to reach Honfleur, the starting point of GR® 223.
All you need to do is get ready: comfortable rucksack, tried-and-tested walking shoes, water bottle, supplies... and off you go along the Calvados coastline!
