Around Torchefelon

Description

With this hike you will explore the Vallin forest, where are located the Rompu and Ravoux ponds, a limestone stream and the other one ferruginous. The hike ends with a beautiful panoramic view.

ROUTE

From the salle des fêtes car park, take in the panoramic view described by the orientation table (view of the Chartreuse and Epine massifs, the Mont du Chat and Bugey - Mont-Blanc in the background on a clear day).

Follow the signposts for the ‘Forêt de Vallin’ through the village of Torchefelon. At the ‘Saint-Joseph’ crossroads, the trail makes a pleasant loop through the Forêt de Vallin, passing the Etang de Vallin and the pond.

Complete the loop and return to Saint-Joseph. Pass the ‘Forêt de Vallin’ car park and then the ‘Les Quatres Sapins’ signpost. Then head towards ‘Dessus Mirieu’, pass the Ravoux pond and follow the path up the Gadizieu stream. Continue on past ‘Dessus-Mirieu’ and join the D520 at the ‘Le Rapoux’ signpost. Walk carefully along it on the left for 50m, then find the Brumière path on your left. It leads to the ‘le Bessay’ signpost, then continue as far as ‘Marmonière’ and cross Torchefelon to return to the starting point.

Vallin Castle

Built in the 14th century and partially remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries, the château consists of a main building topped with high Dauphiné-style roofs, a round tower, a chapel adjoining a second medieval tower, and a ceremonial courtyard.Overlooking the valley of La Tour-du-Pin and nestled at the heart of more than 200 hectares of forests, meadows, and ponds, the Château de Vallin is a haven of peace and greenery, offering an unspoilt natural setting. Built in the 14th century by the Vallin family, who owned it directly for five centuries, the Château de Vallin—now a privately owned historic residence—was partly remodelled and enhanced in the 18th century. The wall paintings in the Neo-Gothic drawing room and the Romantic dining room are unique in the region and deserve particular attention, as do the tufa fountain and the grotto-style fireplace. Within the grounds, the lime-tree avenue—300 metres long, lined with 70 magnificent trees and bordered by two parallel paths of hornbeam hedges and romantic hollies—along with the majestic, centuries-old cedars of Lebanon, all contribute to this preserved natural environment. Located on the edge of the Vallin Forest, the estate provides an ideal starting point for a variety of family walks and hikes. For the past twenty years, the Château de Vallin has undergone an extensive restoration programme, earning it the “Historic Heritage” and “Heritage in Isère” labels, as well as the national awards “VMF–Jeunes” in 2000 and “VMF–Barclays Bank” in 2011. The building has also been awarded the “Heritage in Isère” label, recognising the outstanding heritage value of a site of departmental significance.
