1st day: Deux Bras - Grand Place Cayenne - Grand Place Les Hauts - Ilet à Bourse: 6 hours
2nd day: Ilet à Bourse - Ilet à Malheur - Aurère - Deux Bras: 6 hours
You can never tire of Mafate, it is a paradise for hikers on the island! Spend two days in the heart of these majestic mountains!
Before beginning the hike, you need to order a 4x4 that will take you to Deux-Bras, where you will begin your adventure. Go to the village of Rivière de Galets and park your car. Join the 4x4, which will take you to the middle of the river.
And this is where you'll start your two-day hike! Head up the Rivière des Galets by crossing it several times (in fact there are several ford crossing places). After walking for 30 minutes, you will arrive at an intersection, turn left in the direction of Aurère - Ilet à Malheur via Bras d'Oussy. The signs will indicate the place known as "La Porte". During your ascent, you will see fields that are part of a re-planting programme. In fact, the ONF (Forestry Commission) is restoring the primary forest in this area.
You will reach a cross-roads, several metres after the Source Cabris, turn right in the direction of Grand Place Cayenne via the walkway on the Bras d'Oussy. You will reach another cross-roads, here you should turn right again, still following the direction of Grand Place Cayenne. You will then reach a rather steep ascent, a very beautiful walkway (Le Bras d'Oussy), where you can take some photos. After crossing the walkway, you will see a path along the rock face (with a handrail). After 1 hour 30 mins hiking, you will reach another cross-roads, turn right again, still in the direction of Grand Place Cayenne and at the next cross-roads continue in the same direction. After 3 hours walking you will arrive at Grand Place Cayenne.
GRAND PLACE CAYENNE: is a small, pretty village where you have the opportunity to visit the Notre-Dame de Lourdes church, a simple hut with a metal roof and its bell, which has the inscription "Jésus, Maria, Joseph". The path you have just taken is an historic one, it was used as the route to go to the Mafate Les Eaux spa. It's time for a short break, to make the most of the magnificent view, in the heart of the Cirque.
After your break, you will continue onto Grand Place Les Hauts, via Grand Place Ecole. This will take about 1 hour 30. During your hike you can stop at Grand Place Ecole and have a refreshing drink in the old Mafate postman's shop. Who knows, perhaps you'll be lucky enough to meet him and hear his story!
On arriving at Grand Place Les Hauts, take the direction of Ilet à Bourse, via Col Kichenin. This is the home straight before a well-deserved rest. After 1 hour 30 walking you will be at Ilet à Bourse. You have arrived at the place where you will spend the night at the Gîte de Thomas, the only gîte in Ilet.
Ilet à Bourse: You will see that this Ilet is made up of two parts. The particularity of Ilet à Bourse is its unique view of the sea. It is only from here that you can see this magnificent sight. But that's not all, it is filled with gigantic bamboos known as Fargesia Blue Bamboo, Chinese Bamboo, or simply Giant Bamboo - flora that is truly magnificent!
The next day, after a good sleep, you are off on another day's walking! Take the direction of Ilet à Malheur. This part of the hike will last 2 hours. When you get to Ilet à Malheur, you can visit its wooden chapel with its magnificent stain-glassed windows.
Ilet à Malheur (Isle of Bad Luck): The island takes this sinister name from a confrontation that took place here in 1829. Military detachments commended by Guichard killed around 40 maroons.
Continue, taking the direction of Aurère. On arrival at Aurère, turn right towards Deux-Bras. You will pass in front of the Bord Bazard oratory and that is when you will begin to descend. Be careful, it is a path on the side of the rock face for 500 metres. Continue towards Deux-Bras. You will get to the place called "La Source Cabris". Continue in the direction of Deux-Bras. The path should seem familiar to you. As the day before, you will reach the place known as "La Porte". When you do, continue in the direction of Deux-Bras and join the road where you left the 4X4 the day before. Your adventure is complete!
