This is one of the first routes offered during the "La Lapébie" cycle race. The route includes one category 2 pass and two category 1 passes: the Col des Ares (average gradient 3.9%, maximum gradient 11%), the Col de Menté (average gradient 6.6%, maximum gradient 11.4%) and the Col de Portillon (average gradient 6.8%, maximum gradient 8.2%).
Take the D125 towards Cierp-Gaud and then Fronsac to tackle the first challenge: the Col des Ares. Then head to Juzet d'Izaut and Sengouagnet and follow the signs for the Col de Menté. The descent takes you to Saint-Béat-Lez, where you head towards Spain to reach Bossost. You then tackle the last challenge of the day: the Col du Portillon.
Each bend in this climb honours one of the Spanish winners of the Tour de France, until you reach the monument listing all their victories. The view is well worth a stop to take in the scenery.
