Rocher Cassepot trail

Rocher Cassepot trail

Description

This trail will allow you to discover one of the emblematic boulder chaos of
the forest of Fontainebleau, and a fine example of its ponds.

Froideau pond: Thomas Froideau (1843-1890) was a Waters and Forests inspector in Fontainebleau. He gave his name to this « platière » (sandstone plateau) pond, only refilled by rainwater. As for numerous other ponds in the
forest of Fontainebleau, it does not hold water year round, but is a temporary pond. It is a sink of biodiversity, as a faunistic and floristic life develops around and inside the pond, such as dragonflies and newts.

The Carnot Belvedere: this boulder of strange shape has given its name to the whole rocky chaos. It was the subject of numerous photographs. On old postcards, one can see that this area was not wooded at the beginning of the 20th century.

Esplanade viewpoint: you will find over 200 viewpoints in the Fontainebleau massif. On this trail, a well-cleared viewpoint allows you to observe the northern part of the forest. Its uneven topography with its various altitudes is visible, as well as the landscape diversity.
