The St Christophe Caves Historic Site

In the heart of the Chartreuse Valley, hides the historical site of the Saint-Christophe Caves, a condensed cultural and natural heritage, ancestral passage of water and men.Guided tours of 2 caves and an ancient Roman road. Walks, hikes, prehistory game trails, caving activities, bar, store - you'll find what you're looking for on our site for an unforgettable day out with the whole family! Situated on the border between Savoie and Dauphiné, our site takes you on a tour of the Voie Sarde, an ancient Roman road redeveloped in the 17th century along a canyon-like gorge, and the 2 caves of Saint Christophe. The first invites you to take a meander through a meander full of giant potholes, while the second, a refuge according to legend for the famous smuggler Mandrin, can be crossed on a footbridge 20m above the ground, offering a panoramic view. Access to the caves is by guided tour only. In the reception area, a free permanent exhibition presents the Fru site, home to the first prehistoric men in the Chartreuse! To discover this prehistoric habitat, you can follow a 2h30 hike punctuated by 12 play points for the whole family: "Sur la piste d'Azil et Magda" (On the trail of Azil and Magda). Further information at www.grottes-saint-christophe.com/randonnees-et-balades For even more thrills, try acrospeleo, a combination of via ferrata and caving under the ceiling of the lower cave: www.grottes-saint-christophe.com/speleologie-et-acrospeleologie The bar and reception building are accessible to the motor-impaired. Light meals available in July and August. Visits to the caves and the Voie Sarde are not accessible to the motor-impaired.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

(1) From Pont Saint-Martin, take the Échaillon trail, which winds its way up to the Ravoire plateau. Follow the GR9 markings eastwards and take the trail overlooking the Échaillon gorges, where the Guiers Vif river flows.
(2) The trail passes close to a viewpoint, where caution is advised (no barrier). Return to the GR9, then leave it about 500 m further on to turn north (yellow markings).
(3) Cross the prehistoric site of La Fru to reach the Charmilles car park. Follow the GR9 for about 200 m before joining a yellow-marked path on the right. Cross the Ravoire plateau to the crossroads marked with a signpost.
(4) From here, you can make a round trip to a superb viewpoint overlooking the hamlet of La Grotte. Return to the crossroads and take the yellow-marked path southwards. After walking along the escarpments overlooking the valley, join the GR9 to return to the starting point.
You can admire the gorge by crossing the Roman Bridge, but caution is advised with children.
