This mini-adventure gives you a taste of what it's like to do long-distance hikes. The perfect itinerary to explore a preserved valley and experience life in a mountain refuge. And all this at the gates of Modane and the Vanoise National Park. Pure magic!

For days, you've had a particular word echoing in your ears: GR®5! Even if you never planned it, you can walk in the footsteps of the long-distance hikers who journey through the Haute Maurienne Vanoise every year. You've carefully packed your rucksack and you're ready to tackle the uninterrupted ascent from Loutraz: off you go on a journey through Vallon de Polset. If you make a detour to the right from Pierre Brune, you'll find a warm welcome at Orgère refuge. Take your time on this wooded trail, enjoying every step of the way. Under majestic Scots pines and lodgepole pines, whose cones crackle under the sun, the trail will occasionally surprise you with its gentle inclines. Look, a squirrel! And a crossbill over there! If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a few deer and ibex. But shh! let them come to you by surprise… This pleasant hike of one or two stages is the perfect getaway.

The valley of Polset is a charming alpine hamlet at 1700 m altitude. You reach it by taking the road up to L'Orgère and the the road to Saint André.There are many starting points for walks and hikes, allowing you to reach the nearby Vanoise National Park. Hiking in summer Ski touring and snowshoeing in winter.

Polset Falls

Very beautiful waterfall at about 1850 m altitude, at the bottom of the Polset valley. Accessible on foot only.This magnificent waterfall will enchant you with so much beauty, in an exceptional mountain landscape. Access is on foot from the hamlet of Polset towards the lac de la partie. It is located after a water reservoir (EDF).

Orgere refuge

Next to a magnificent forest of conifers (some 700 years old), the refuge of the Vanoise National Park welcomes everyone (especially the motor and visually handicapped) and informs them about the national park. It is a stage of the GR5.

In the Vanoise national park, enjoy a stunning view and traditionnal dishes.The refuge de l'Orgère is located in a suspended valley above Modane, and is one of the 4 gateways to the Vanoise National Park. Accessible by road, you'll find it easy to spot marmots and ibex. A discovery trail is available, also accessible to people with reduced mobility.
