Accessible by train and bus from Durtol, this two-day circular walk takes you deep into the heart of the volcanic region. A long hike through a wide variety of landscapes to the summit of the Puy de Dôme, with an overnight stop in the village of Laschamps.
A fantastic 2-day circular hike, accessible without a car, to conquer the Puy de Dôme
Easily accessible by public transport (TER train or metropolitan bus), the ‘From Durtol to the Chaîne des Puys in 2 days’ hike offers an exceptional immersion in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Passing through an astonishing variety of landscapes, the route climbs from the edge of the Limagne fault line up to the wide-open spaces of the Plateau des Dômes, with the legendary summit of the Puy de Dôme as a backdrop.
Stages & highlights of the route:
• Day 1 – From Durtol to Laschamps: Leave the urban area via Sarcenat and La Fontaine du Berger to climb to the summit of the Puy de Dôme. After taking in the 360° panorama, head down to the peaceful village of Laschamps for the night.
• Day 2 – From Laschamps to Durtol: Resume the trail across the plateau, passing through Manson, La Font-de-l’Arbre, Le Cheix and Orcines, before heading back down towards Durtol.
• Easy access & sustainable transport: An ideal ‘zero-carbon’ route, connected to bus networks and the railway line.
• Comfort option: You can reach the Maison de Site at the Chemin des Gouris junction to ascend or descend the Puy de Dôme on the rack railway (Panoramique des Dômes).
Departures: Parking du stade, Durtol, direction "Vulcania" / gare SNCF, Durtol, direction "Vulcania".
Difficulties: Significant gradient. Ascent and descent of the Puy-de-Dôme.
From the "Chemin des Gouris" crossroads, you can reach the "Maison de Site".
