Place Baudin
Toute cette partie de Denain appartenait à Usinor ! Autour de la place Baudin, il y avait des maisons de contremaîtres, des ingénieurs. Les maisons des ouvriers étaient à côté. Quand Usinor a fermé, les HLM ont racheté les logements. Avant il y avait le marché et la ducasse sur la place. C'était gai ! Mais la place n'était pas aux normes et du coup maintenant le marché se fait uniquement en centre-ville.
Salle Baudin
La salle Baudin appartenait à Usinor. On y était tout le temps ! Il y avait les associations sportives, la distribution de cadeaux de Noël, pour la fête des mères… C'était gai ! Je me souviens des thés dansants avec l'orchestre Léo André ! Quand Usinor est parti, la Mairie l'a rachetée au Franc symbolique et l'a rénovée. Les associations continuent à l'utiliser. Et on organise toujours des thés dansants une fois par mois !
Dispensaire
Il y avait un dispensaire dans la cité où on se faisait vacciner. Il y avait aussi une assistante sociale. Elle aidait nos mères à élever leurs enfants. Elle leur donnait des conseils. On ne nait pas maman, ça s'apprend ! Je me souviens, quand j'étais petite, dans la cour, il y avait un bunker pour se protéger des bombes.
Cité Bessemer
La cité a été rénovée en deux fois : d'abord les logements qui font le tour, et après, les maisons à l'intérieur. C'est pour ça que les maisons ne se ressemblent pas tellement. Les loyers étaient dérisoires. Du temps d'Usinor, ma mère ne payait pas l'eau ! L'usine s'occupait des travaux dans les maisons, bétonnait même les cours. Ils ont installés l'un des premiers supermarchés dans le quartier. Il faisait crédit aux familles qui payaient quand les hommes recevaient leur quinzaine. Du temps d'Usinor, on n'avait pas de salle de bain. On avait un grand baquet qu'on chauffait.
Ecole d'Usinor
Là, c'était l'école d'Usinor. Ils formaient les ouvriers qualifiés pour qu'ils montent en grade. Ils formaient les hommes, pas les femmes qui étaient secrétaires. D'ailleurs, une fois qu'elles se mariaient, elles ne pouvaient plus travailler à l'usine !
Rue Arthur Brunet
Ici, il y avait une succession de commerces de toute sorte, de l'épicerie au magasin de luxe.
Terril de la Fosse Renard
Il est beau notre quartier, avec le terril derrière ! On peut le visiter maintenant, c'est le Musée de l'archéologie qui s'en occupe.
Ecole Michelet
Ce bâtiment a toujours été un lieu d'enseignement. Aujourd'hui mixte, il était autrefois réservé aux garçons.
Etablissements Cail
L'essor que prend la sidérurgie, le développement des mines, la présence de l'Escaut attirent l'implantation des industries métallurgiques et de constructions mécaniques ; c'est ainsi que s'implante à Denain les Ets CAIL le 14 octobre 1844 pour y fabriquer des chaudières, locomotives, des appareils de scierie.
Rond-point cafougnette
Avant, il y avait l'entreprise Cail et les cités des mines à cet endroit. Tout a été rasé. Il y avait le canal aussi. Il servait aux péniches qui amenaient les matières.
Bureau des secrétaires
Sur la photo, on voit les bureaux des secrétaires et l'entrée de l'usine. Aujourd'hui, c'est la mission locale, entre autres, qui occupe les locaux. La photo a été prise pendant la manifestation des ouvriers quand ils ont appris qu'Usinor allait fermer.
Porte d'entrée d'Usinor
Ici, c'est la rue Louis Petit. Elle n'existait pas avant. Il y avait un grand mur. Derrière, c'était l'usine, on ne voyait pas ce qui se passait à l'intérieur. Ils ont organisés des visites quand l'usine a fermé. Aujourd'hui il ne reste que ce bout d'entrée.
Cinéma du Nouveau Monde
Il s'agit de l'actuelle salle "Louis Petit". On avait trois cinémas à Denain : le Central, l'Alcazar, et dans le quartier, on avait le Nouveau Monde, mais nous on l'appelait le cinéma Biloute ! L'arrière du cinéma était le lieu de rencontre des jeunes couples.
Eglise Sacré Cœur
Je suis contente qu'ils ne démolissent pas l'église ! Il y a tellement de bâtiments qui ont été rasés ! Le château dans le parc Lebret - c'était le coin des amoureux ! La piscine… Elle était belle cette piscine ! C'étaient des bains douches avec des lattes et des cabines en bois. C'était monsieur Planchon qui tenait l'entrée, qu'est-ce qu'il était gentil !
Groupe scolaire Jean Paul II
On y trouvait des forges. Avant il y avait un cloitre dans l'école. On y apprenait la couture, la dactylo. Juste à côté il y avait des corons des mines mais franchement c'étaient les pires du pire ! La route était en terre. Ils ont tout abattu. Il y a une ruche maintenant à cet endroit.
