The chapel of Grevilly - Beaujolais Vert - Saint-Forgeux

The chapel of Grevilly - Beaujolais Vert - Saint-Forgeux

Description

An easy hike through the wooded hills and forests of the Tarare mountains. Stop at the chapel of Grévilly, the oldest chapel in the Tarare region, to admire panoramic views of the Jura, the Alps, and the Monts d'Or from the orientation table.

You'll love:
• An easy hike, where the gentle hills accentuated by bocage meet the steep, forest-covered slopes of the Tarare Mountains.
• A relaxing and observatory stop at the Grévilly Chapel. An orientation table invites you to lean back and name the surrounding landscapes seen throughout the first half of the hike: the Tarare Mountains and the Monts d'Or, the Jura Mountains, the Alps, and more.
• The Grévilly Chapel, the oldest religious building in the Tarare region. Its walls are covered with votive offerings.

You'll enjoy it better:
• By choosing the Grévilly Chapel site for a picnic.
• In summer, when the gardens come to life and flowers color the meadows.
• On an Afghan walk to soak up both the open horizon and the undergrowth. • Scanning the sky for the multicolored sails of the paragliders that regularly fly overhead.

A bit of culture:
Grévilly Chapel
It dates back to the 11th or 12th century. The oldest part is the choir with its Romanesque-style vault. In the 14th century, it became a place of pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary. Inside, an astonishing collection of marble, embroidered, painted canvas, and print votive offerings adorns the nave; they were donated during the Franco-Prussian conflict of 1870, and later during the First World War. Outside, the main entrance to the chapel is sheltered by a canopy called a galonnière. Two other medieval chapels are mentioned when discussing Grévilly. Clévy in Saint-Romain-de-Popey, whose architecture is original, and Vindry in Saint-Loup, with its very pretty bell tower wall with braid.
