The Barred Spur of Montfort
During the Middle Ages, the territory of Revermont was quite different. The Bresse offered a humid forest face with clay soil where travel was difficult most of the year. On the contrary, the mountain was very populated. The rocky subsoil made it easier to move around in all seasons. Numerous hamlets, now disappeared, dotted the hills and valleys. Grazing herds, cereal crops, forests and an important vineyard formed an open and diversified landscape.
Numerous communication routes, often ancient, allowed the populations to circulate. At the beginning of feudalism and during the Middle Ages, strongholds multiplied at the foot of which dwellings flourished or disappeared.
The site of Montfort presents a typical configuration of the Middle Ages with its stronghold, at the top of the hill, and its hamlets placed in the surroundings under its protection, but it could well be of even more ancient origin and go back to the Celtic period.
