A testament to Floreffe's industrial past, the former coal mine (closed in 1952) now houses the Blue Cross, an animal shelter. Activities are organized there every year.Coal mining began in the 16th century in Floriffoux, but it was in 1844 that the "Ste Barbe" coal mine was incorporated as a company called the "Société des Mines et Houillères de Floriffoux." In 1952, the year the site closed, there were 77 miners and the seams being mined were located at a depth of 220 meters. The "Vieille Sambre" or Noue de Ham, a former branch of the Sambre before it was diverted and channeled in 1965-66, is today a haven of peace popular with fishermen and walkers. Here you will see the remains of a bridge that was once used to transport coal to Ham.
