The village’s name derives from the word ‘castrum’, an ancient fortified camp built by the Romans in antiquity.
In the Middle Ages, a fortified village was established on this site, which offered a view of any danger from afar, enabling the inhabitants to organise their defence. Today, there is an exceptional view to the south and across the Pyrenees. The bell tower was built on the site of a former rampart tower.
The circular walk is named Lahire, in memory of Etienne de Vignoles, Lord of Lahire, who became Lord of Castéra in 1426. This comrade-in-arms of Joan of Arc was renowned for his valour. He has gone down in history as the Jack of Hearts in a deck of cards, known as the ‘Lahire’.
