From Maison de Moriond, head for the Belvédère area to reach the road to the Belvédère car park (6km).
After the last chalet (at the end of the tarmac road), walk up the mountain path to the Avals Valley to the place known as “Le Biol”. (1 hour). In the meadow downhill you can see the cornerstone of the old shelter destroyed by an avalanche in February 1999.
Walk along the bottom of the plateau in the large Avals Valley. After a few steep slopes, the path flattens out to a mountain hut: Cave de la Grande Val.
Take the left-hand path to the bottom of the valley up to the chalet on the Plan de la Sah (also known as Chalet de la Grande Val) (75 minutes). Stay on the path until Col des Saulces before you go past two chalets: Cave de la Petite Val and Chalet du Plan des Baux (also known as Petit Mont Blanc).
From Col des Saulces (2456m), take the slightly steep path up through Petit Mont Blanc. Continue until Col du Mône. Go back to the ridge which goes left up to the peak with fantastic views of the Vanoise glaciers (panoramic table).
Return to the summit of Petit Mont Blanc, take the path straight back down alongside Avals Valley, then turn right to the Col des Saulces. To return, cut right under the pass then continue on the same route to the car park.
From the Col des Saulces, walk 400 metres along the slightly uphill north-facing mountain path and gain a foothold on the right-hand berm. From this plateau (Plan des Baux), walk up a straight then zigzagging uphill path through the mountain slopes until you reach the Passage de Plassa (2760m, huge cairn). Beyond the Passage de Plassa, on the north side, there’s extensive scree and you can see where a plane crashed on December 19th 1969. Watch out for the large cliffs downhill from the scree. (From Col des Saulces: 1 hour).
From the Passage de Plassa, you can walk along the side of the scree then on a rocky roped path to the Col de Mey - (2780m). This challenging and breathtakingly steep walk is for very experienced hikers.
After reaching Col de Mey, continue to Brèche de la Portetta then go straight down to Le Biol. Take the same path back to the car park.
