On departure from Val-Dieu Abbey – the monastery of Cistercian monks that was founded around 1215 – you will follow the Berwinne. This river, which flows between Liège and Maastricht, is a hard-water river with its source several hectometers from here in Aubel. You will then pass through Houillères forest to get to the pretty village of Charneux. The next part of the journey will be a workout for your calves, due to changes in elevation and the unpaved section. Finally, you will reach the abbey for a moment of pure relaxation, thanks, in particular, to its brewery.
