Alden Biesen - Commandery

Alden Biesen impresses its visitors. It is a huge fortified castle, the largest of its kind in Belgium, surrounded by a brilliant estate. The street front garden is geometrically shaped like the French gardens. At the back, there is an English garden and orchards. The complex includes several corner towers, a farmhouse, a hospital, an orangery and a guest quarter. Alden Biesen is also the cultural centre of the Flemish Community. The Alden Biesen Commandery was a castle-monastery of the Teutonic Order and the seat of the great Commandery of the Old Junks, whose Latin name was Balivia de Juncis, one of the twelve great bailiwicks of the government of the Teutonic Order of the Holy Roman Empire from the 13th century until the French Revolution. It has been completely renovated and is now an international conference centre. An architectural ensemble built from the 13th to the 18th century by the Teutonic Knights in the former Principality of Liege, this estate and its castle are located in the Province of Limburg in Belgium. The estate was donated in 1220 to the Teutonic Knights, a German hospitaller brotherhood that became a military order. From the 16th to the 17th century, the order built the castle and in the 18th century, one of the last commanders transformed it into a late baroque residence with an English-style park. After a violent fire in 1971, the site was listed in 2000, fully restored and converted into an international conference centre. Its former hospice is now a brasserie.
