Bessines was developed around the ancient estate of Bassinius, a rich Gallo-Roman landowner, and is situated at the crossroads of the Aunis and Poitou regions. Bordered by the Jaron reach and the Vieille Sèvre, this rural commune nestles on the side of a hillside that dominated the ancient Gulf of the Pictons. Its Romanesque church of Saint-Caprais, a stopover on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela, and its three harbours open the door to the Marais Poitevin. Its marsh is classified as a Biotope and a Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest
Have a nice walk and don't forget that you are not alone on the paths you are going to take. We invite you to respect nature: avoid picking flowers and plants, do not leave any rubbish behind, respect inhabited areas, stay on the paths, keep dogs on a lead
