▶Preparing for a winter outing in the mountains
Before setting off on a hike, snowshoe or ski tour, there are a few key steps you need to take to ensure your safety and that of your companions.
▶1. Check the weather and conditions
Check the general and local weather conditions (changes during the day, fog, wind, etc.).
Find out about the quality of the snow (powdery, icy, blowing snow, etc.).
Make sure there is no precipitation forecast.
▶2. Prepare your route
Study the approach, the height of the route and the access conditions.
Estimate the journey time and look for possible escape routes.
Use reliable resources: IGN maps, GPS, topographical guides.
▶3. Assess the risks
Seek advice from local professionals: guides, refuge wardens, tourist offices, etc.
Take account of natural hazards (avalanches, fog, slippery terrain, etc.).
▶4. Inform your friends and family
Share your itinerary, departure and return times.
Give the number of participants and their telephone numbers.
Indicate the vehicle(s) you will be using and where you will be parking.
▶5. Check your equipment

▶6. In the event of a problem
In Europe, dial 112, the free emergency number.
(1) The trail starts from Route de la Greffière, which connects to the RN5 at the centre the of La Faucille. Join the RN5, cross it carefully, then aim in the direction of Gex.
(2) The trail starts on the left, just opposite La Couronne hotel. It begins a gradual climb before leveling off into a rolling landscape. You then enter the Turet forest, where the path winds leisurely between the trees. Along the way, you pass spectacular geological formations, evidence of the mountain range's turbulent past. The trail then joins the Vieille Maison forest road. Follow this track on the right to reach the Turet forest chalet.
(3) The trail (signposted) resumes just after the chalet, on the left side of the road. A slight climb leads to another crossing of the forest track, before entering a pretty, shaded valley. There, a junction offers a choice between the Mauvais Pas trail, which descends towards Gex, or towards Le Turet.
(4) Keep to the right, towards Le Turet. The path enters a charming woodland once again, lined with old stone walls. As you leave the forest, a small ridge comes into view: pass by the small stone cross standing there, then begin the descent.
(5) Very quickly, the view clears, giving way to a magnificent 180° panorama. A conveniently placed bench invites you to take a contemplative break: from here you will see the peaks of the Jura, the plain, and, on a clear day, the summits of the Alps in the distance.
The return journey back to the start is along the same path.
No. Dogs strictly forbidden in the Nature Reserve
