In the heart of the Bois de Sestrière, a wide forest track, a GR5 route linking Montgenèvre to Briançon, takes you straight to the commune and Col de Montgenèvre.
From the parking lot alongside the N94, enter the forest directly from a small path at the start of the parking lot alongside the old buvette.
This path then runs alongside the Vallon ravine stream for around 200 metres, leading to a wide forest track and a fork in the road:
At this junction, take the left-hand track (the right-hand track follows the GR5 towards Le Fontenil and Briançon) towards the Col de Montgenèvre: the track rises and winds slowly through the forest, crossing the torrent de la Ruine near a hairpin bend.
Leave this hairpin bend by taking the track straight into the bend, and continue for over a kilometer. At the next junction, leave the original track and take the one on the right.
Follow this track for 500 metres, until you reach a fork in the road (altitude 1655m): Leave the GR5 and take the right-hand track to join the Chemin de Sestrière. This route avoids crossing and skirting the N94. The forest becomes less dense, and your itinerary soon reaches the ski slopes of the Montgenèvre resort and the Centre balnéo & Spa de la Durancia: reach the roundabout on the N94: this will take you to the center of Montgenèvre.
Return by the same route.
