HIKING TRAIL : CIRCUIT DES 4 ROCHES

Soldiers who perished during the Battle of Abreschviller on August 21st 1914 are buried in this National Necropolis of World War One. 464 French soldiers (77 unknown victims and 2 ossuaries) and 370 German soldiers (117 unknown victims and 1 ossuary) lay here. After the battle, inhabitants were asked to buried the victims temporarily. After the war, the bodies were identified and buried in the necropolis.

To reach Forge Rock (Roche de la Forge), you may starts at Abreschviller pond. Follow the tiny road in the direction of Vasperviller and after a 5 minutes-walk, leave the road and follow the signs with a red ring, on your left. After that, you may reach Forge Stone. You may enjoy the view on a former chimney: there used to be an industrial forge there, using hydraulic power from the Red Sarre (Sarre Rouge).

Verrerie's rock is near Abreschviller pond. "Quatre Roches" pathway ("4 rocks" pathway) lays nearby and allows you to discover 4 rocks: La Forge, Le Moulin, Des Boeufs and finallly, La Verrerie. Enjoy the outstanding view on the valley.

The Chapelle Ste Claire, one of the "Seven Roses" of St Quirin (the white rose), is located on the departmental road 96f, on the way out of Vasperviller towards St Quirin. A charming little mountain chapel, it was also originally a Celtic sanctuary, Christianised in the 6th century. In 1440, it was a chapel with a hermitage, then in the Middle Ages, a monastery of the Poor Clares, and in the 18th century it became a hermitage again. Restored in 1808, it now hosts the pilgrimage of St Clare, who is invoked for eye diseases.

Seven sanctuaries called the « Seven Roses » are to be discovered in Saint-Quirin and in the dependent communes of the Priory. The Verriers Church is located in Lettenbach which is a small hamlet situated between Saint-Quirin and Abreschviller. Currently the ancient glass factory’s chapel is owned by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Charity.

The church of St Theresa, one of the "Seven Roses" of St Quirin (the Pink Rose) was built in 1968. A double staircase leads to the top of the bell tower and the brightness of the 17 stained glass windows represent the family tree of Christ. Ste Thérèse is a church "like no other" whose beauty and richness are revealed little by little. Each visit is a discovery, so many variations in form, volume, light and colour. Access to the bell tower is only allowed on request for security reasons.

A shaded 35 ares pond bordered by two streams is at your disposal. You will find: a bait sales area, a picnic area with tables and benches, a giant barbecue, a shelter, a playground, toilets accessible to people with reduced mobility, a shady car park, a gutting place with sink. The site is accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Located between Saint-Quirin and Abreschviller, come to discover a good range of hiking trails (among which the GR5) in Lettenbach hamlet. If you go South, do not miss William's Cross (La Croix Guillaume in French), a former Gallo-roman hamlet. You may also enjoy one of the Seven Roses (7 chapels and churches located in Saint-Quirin and its surroundings): La Rose de Cristal or Chapelle des verriers (Cristal Rose or Glassmakers' Chapel in English). It was built during the 18th Century with a Renaissance style facade and a small clock tower with an onion-shaped dome.
