The hiking trail of "la roche du Diable", starting from Abreschviller, has many assets. The cave and the chapel dedicated to Léon IX in Walscheid are a must. The cave is the deepest of the Vosges Massif. The chapel is dedicated to Pope Leo IX (1002-1054). And of course, there is "la roche du Diable" (the Devil's Rock), with the face of the devil carved in the sandstone.
According to legend, this is the site of a convent of nuns, destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. It is said that the nuns had just enough time to hide their treasures in a crevice of the rock. The legend also tells that a shepherd, exploring the rock, came to a cave. Three young girls were sitting there. They asked him to free them, but a massive dragon was sitting on a treasure at the bottom of the cave, so the shepherd fled.
Enjoy the view by resting under the gazebo and admiring the view!
The circular path is 9.7 km long and takes about 3 hours and 35 minutes to complete. The difficulty is medium because of the elevation gain.
