Description

Duration: 3 hours – Distance: 10 km
Running between the river and the ridge path, this trail will charm you with its many vantage points and panoramic view of the village of Vabre.

A hiking trail through unspoilt countryside, running alongside the River Gijou, largely shaded, with magnificent views along the ridge walk.
You can also enjoy a visit to the village of Vabre with its 13th-century belfry, its maquis exhibition, its temple and its many restored wash houses (guided tours available in July and August on Tuesday mornings, subject to booking with the tourist office).

Suivre la rue principale à gauche, passer devant la mairie et traverser le pont. Descendre l'escalier de la gare (aujourd'hui disparue) et tourner à gauche sur le sentier du petit train. Le chemin goudronné devient après quelques centaines de mètres juste empierré.

Passer sur le pont du Ga et sous le tunnel, et rejoindre la D 171 et continuer à gauche sur environ un kilomètre. Descendre à gauche, passer sur le petit pont sur le Gijou et remonter à gauche par le chemin creux.

A la route, continuer à droite sur 50 m pour rejoindre le point de bifurcation entre le circuit court et le circuit long. Circuit court : continuer par la route à gauche puis encore à gauche sur la D 53. Après la courbe de la route, suivre le sentier qui monte à droite, traverser la route et prendre en face le chemin qui monte en serpentant à travers bois. A la route, tourner à gauche et rejoindre le chemin des crêtes. Circuit long : Continuer par le chemin herbeux à droite. Traverser la D 53 et monter par la petite route, avant la maison, prendre le sentier assez pentu à droite. Suivre la route à droite sur 150 m, puis en face par le chemin empierré, qui se rétrécit et descend vers le hameau de Caynac. Monter par le premier chemin à droite, et prendre en face la route du relais TV. A la dernière maison, prendre le chemin à gauche et rejoindre le chemin des crêtes, que l'on suit à gauche sur environ 2km.

A la patte d'oie, prendre le sentier à gauche qui descend jusqu'à la D 55. La suivre à gauche et rejoindre le parking par le pont sur le Gijou.

Mountain sandpiper

Vabre, situated on the banks of the Gijou, has retained its mountain character with its granite-framed houses, its belfry and its restored wash houses. The village is unique in that it lies on the edge of the Sidobre massif and the Monts de Lacaune.A historic trail of around 2 km invites you to explore the historic village of Vabre, from the Middle Ages to the days of the Resistance, which led to the village being recognised as one of the “Villages of the Righteous” following the Second World War. From its earliest historical remains (the 13th-century Porte de l’Horloge) right up to the present day, Vabre has stood the test of time, bearing witness to the Wars of Religion (the 17th-century houses on Rue Vieille), the golden age of the spinning mills (the 19th and early 20th centuries) and the Maquis, particularly during the Second World War, when it played a very active role. During this dark period, the exemplary behaviour of the inhabitants, who hid and protected around a hundred Jews, has earned Vabre membership of the ‘Towns and Villages of the Righteous’ network since 2015 (in July and August, you can visit the Maquis Exhibition during the Tourist Information Office’s opening hours). Don’t miss the 14-stop historical trail to find out more. In 2018, the village was awarded the ‘village étoilé’ label for its energy-saving policy and efforts to reduce light pollution. The Sidobre granite quarries, masonry firms and many other businesses are based in the Craft Industry Zone and the Business Centre.
