Church of St. Maurice

This church, with its façade broadly exposed to the sun, awaits you a little way outside the village, as if encouraging you to meditate facing the mountains! In addition to its late Baroque décor, this church has an interesting collection of reliquaries. In 1760, the previous church was destroyed. The sacristy and the base of the bell tower were preserved and the new, larger building was built to face south, towards the valley. The exterior decoration is confined to 2 sundials and a statue of St. Maurice on horseback. The most interesting part is inside... Despite having been modified extensively over the centuries, the main altarpiece has retained several Baroque elements. Even though the vast tabernacle from the early 20th century partially conceals the painting from 1767, you can still make out St. Maurice on horseback and St. Blaise dressed as a bishop. The same saints appear as statues in the upper section framing the depiction of a black Virgin similar to the one in the church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Vie. Surrounding it, the trompe l'œil murals in the apse and the side walls of the chancel are worth a look. The village seems lost on its balcony overlooking the Les Dorons valley, but astoundingly, the parish of Feissons possesses a very significant collection of relics: eight duly sealed reliquaries contain 149 pouches in the names of the major saints, Apostles, martyrs, kings and popes. It is enough to make you lose yourself in conjecture as to the origin and authenticity of what was often an essential driving force for popular piety! drone-de-regard.fr/vr/facim/73_feissons-sur-salins.html

Feissons sur Salins

Located at 1260 meters, you can find the city office, a bar/restaurant and a bed and breakfast. It is possible to visit the Saint Maurice church (Baroc style) and to discover the « pierre à cupules » (cupule rock) and to walk on the paths around the village. The inhabitants of Feissons are called the « Feissonnais ». Feissons probably comes from the latin word « fagus » which means beech. It’s an evolution of the word « Faisse » which is a place where there is a big beech. In the Middle-Age documents, it is sometimes written « Feyssonis » or « Foissé ». The city is facing the south, forming a spur dominating the Moûtiers Valley (the Croix de Feissons which is at 1503 meters and downhill the Bozel Valley above the steep area of copse overhanging the road from Melphe to the Frasse, ancient provincial road). This panoramic viewpoint, giving a good point of view to discover the four valleys joining in Moûtiers, may explain the presence of a carved stone at « La Charpine », west of « Le Villard » comparable to the one in « La Vallée des Merveilles » in the Mercantour and the « Val Camonica » in Lombardy. The parish of Feissons was attached to the abbey of Saint-Maurice d’Agaune and we don’t know when this dependence ended. Dedicated to Saint-Maurice, the actual church was built during the 18th century. Despite the small territory, the livestock in 1561 was quite large : 110 cows, 21 « moges », 29 « mogeons », 13 calves, 77 goats and 370 sheep. Back in these days, the presence of three draft ox showed the importance of farming. The exposure favoured the cereal farming.
