Le Sentier du Baroque - De la chapelle de la Combe à l'Eglise de Saint Nicolas

The church of Saint-Nicolas is one of the crown jewels of Alpine Baroque art. It was built during the first half of the 18th Century using funds provided by expatriates and colporteurs going to the German Low Country.Characteristic of the Alpine Baroque with its sober exterior and its interior bursting with colour, gilding and cherubs, the church of St. Nicholas is an enchantment for the eyes. Known for its "Saint-Nicolas blue", which gives rhythm to the vaults entirely painted in the 19th century, its five polychrome carved wooden altarpieces and its unsuspected trompe-l'oeil, the interior of the building gives the word magnificence its full meaning! Don't forget to push open the door of the nearby Museum of Sacred Art, to plunge into the history of the village, its famous peddlers and the sumptuous Baroque period!

The church of Saint-Gervais, a Baroque masterpiece, was completely restored in 2016 as part of the European ALCOTRA programme. Nine contemporary stained glass windows, created by the artist Kim En Joong, were installed at this time.

Next to the church of Saint-Nicolas, the Musée d'Art Sacré (Sacred Art Museum) displays some 50 objects dating from the 18th to the 19th centuries, retracing the history of the village.This unique collection (sculptures, paintings, goldsmith's and silversmith's objects, liturgical vestments) is largely the result of the generosity and faith of Saint-Nicolatains, expatriates in German-speaking countries. Between the 15th and 18th centuries, the difficulties of life in the mountains prompted some inhabitants to leave for Germany or Italy, to earn a living as peddlers or craftsmen. Some of them succeeded in establishing themselves as bourgeois merchants in Europe's major cities. They then made substantial donations to their parishes of origin, contributing to the wealth of decorations in the region's churches and chapels! During the vacation season, guided tours of the church and sacred art museum are usually held on Fridays at 3pm, and guided tours of the museum are available all year round on request. Outside these periods, the Musée d'art sacré is open by appointment.

And when you arrive, you'll have the same feeling: that you've shared a truly special experience. 3 to 5 hours of electrically-assisted mountain biking, with a maximum elevation gain of 950m. Intermediate level on small roads, tracks and stony trails. Regular mountain biking is recommended. The trip is supervised by a state-qualified mountain-biking instructor, and visits are led by a Savoie Mont-Blanc Heritage Guide.
