Description
For centuries, the Mirambel forest has offered harmony between humans and nature. Mixed woodland, with deciduous and coniferous trees, it is a place where time seems to stand still.Depart from the church car park. Take the road towards Couffy; go through the village.Turn right towards Combefort-Haut. 50 m further on, take the path on the right. Cross the stream, the Levades. At the intersection, go left for 100 m.At the next crow's foot, set off on the right-hand track.At the forestry track, fork right for 200 m.Turn left on the path where there is a wooden barrier. At the pond, continue along the track in front of you. Go left at the next intersection.Take the left-hand trail. Follow it until you reach a barrier.Take the track opposite for 100 m, and then the path to the right.Take the trail on the right (old Roman road). At the next intersection turn right. Go straight on at the next crossroads.At the crow's foot, turn right.At the crossing before the village, set off on the right-hand path. At the next crossing, go straight ahead and continue on the wide track.Take the right-hand path, pass the barrier, and continue. At the intersection at the right-angled bend, turn left. 200 m further on, take the trail on the right, which rises slightly at a right angle.At the barrier, cross the forest track to take the path through the forest in front of you. A few metres further on, take the right-hand trail.Go along the forestry track. 20 m further on, turn left onto a winding trail that climbs; continue until you reach the viewpoint over the Mountains of Cantal and the Massif du Sancy. Continue past the panoramic viewpoint until you reach the crossroads.At the place where the paths cross (memorial stone), take the descending left-hand path.At the track, take the way opposite you, and continue along the fence. At a crossroads of trails, continue on the small left-hand trail that still runs alongside the fence. Pass over the footbridge and follow this path to reach Saint-Rémy.

Bourg de Saint-Rémy
Au départ du bourg de Saint-Rémy, un magnifique chêne de Sully vient orner la place du village. Sully, ministre du roi Henri IV, en charge de l’embellissement des routes et villages, avait incité à planter des arbres remarquables. L’église du XIIe siècle compte au milieu de son dallage granitique des dalles funéraires. A l’extérieur, l’abside semi-circulaire du chœur est décorée d’une corniche à modillons avec d’étranges personnages.
La Forêt de Mirambel
La forêt de Mirambel est d'origine ecclésiastique. Après avoir fait l'objet d'une appropriation par les habitants, elle a été propriété d'une famille noble. Suite à la Révolution, les habitants ont retrouvé leurs droits.D'une surface de 382 ha, elle est maintenant propriété de la commune qui en confie la gestion à l'ONF. A noter que les habitants bénéficient encore aujourd'hui du droit d'affouage : moyennant une petite redevance, ils peuvent couper du bois pour leurs besoins personnels.
De l’homme et de la nature
Cet étang a été construit par les hommes afin de lutter contre les incendies de forêt. Mais la nature a progressivement repris ses droits sur ce milieu artificiel : se sont installés des joncs, des carex, des typhas ; à l’arrière, un sol flottant s’est formé, la tourbière gagne du terrain.Avec un peu de chance vous pourrez peut-être apercevoir le héron cendré qui a élu domicile ici.
Voie gallo-romaine
Une voie, dite antique, reliant Ussel à La Courtine, traverse la forêt de Mirambel. Fermez les yeux et imaginez que sous vos pieds, il y a une grande concentration de moellons, fragments de tuiles et parements de murs. Mais d’où viennent-ils ? Probablement des habitats et autres bâtiments implantés le long de cette voie. Un peu plus loin au nord de la commune, le site « des Fonts », probablement une ancienne villae, fait l’objet d’un travail de recherche archéologique.
L’allée des gardes
« L’allée des gardes », alignement de grands résineux, fait référence aux gardes forestiers qui gère ce massif. Derrière cette allée, la forêt est exploitée en régénération naturelle (par opposition à la plantation de plants issus de pépinières) : le sous-bois est nettoyé, quelques beaux arbres conservés jouent le rôle de semencier. Les graines donnent naissance à un arbrisseau; progressivement les « vieux » semenciers sont éliminés pour laisser place aux jeunes pousses.
La sonate de Mirambel
Ce xylophone a été réalisé par de jeunes adultes de l’IME de Sainte-Fortunade en Corrèze. Par cette construction, ils ont cherché à nous faire découvrir la variabilité des sonorités que produisent les différentes essences d’arbres suivant leur aspect, leur dureté et leur durabilité.Il ne tient plus qu’à vous de vous laisser bercer par cette expérience auditive.
Les Monts d’Auvergne
Si le soleil est de la partie, l’Auvergne voisine vous laissera admirer ses volcans. A droite, le Massif du Sancy, à gauche, les Monts du Cantal, au centre le Plateau du Cézallier. Il serait cependant dommage de n’admirer que l’arrière-plan de ce paysage : la campagne de la Haute-Corrèze mélange couleurs et formes des prairies, forêts de résineux et de feuillus.
La Résistance
La stèle dressée à ce carrefour de chemins reprend le Chant des Partisans, hymne de la Résistance. Elle fait partie du sentier d’interprétation qui recoupe partiellement cette randonnée. Durant la Seconde Guerre, en juillet 1943, 60 à 80 résistants appartenant au groupe de Vincent Faïta (résistant communiste d’origine italienne) se sont cachés dans cette forêt. Abrités dans de simples huttes de branchages, ils viennent s’y réfugier entre deux embuscades destinées à ralentir l’avancée allemande.

Bourg de Saint-Rémy
From the village of Saint-Rémy, a magnificent Sully oak tree adorns the village square. Sully, King Henry IV's minister in charge of beautifying roads and villages, encouraged the planting of remarkable trees. The 12th-century church has gravestones set into its granite paving. Outside, the semicircular apse of the choir is decorated with a modillion cornice with strange characters.
Of man and nature
This lake was dug to supply water to fight forest fires. But nature has gradually regained its rights over this artificial environment: rushes, sedges, bulrushes; at the back, a floating area of soil has formed, the bog is gaining ground.With a bit of luck, you might be able to spot the grey heron that has taken up residence here.
Gallo-Roman road
A road, said to date from antiquity, linking Ussel to La Courtine crosses the Mirambel forest. Close your eyes and imagine that under your feet there is a large concentration of rubble, tile fragments and wall facings. But where do they come from? Probably dwellings and other buildings located along this road. A little further north of the town, the "des Fonts" site, probably an old villa, is the subject of archaeological research.
L’allée des Gardes
"L'allée des Gardes", rows of large coniferous trees, refers to the forest rangers who manage this massif. Behind this alley, the forest is managed through natural regeneration (as opposed to planting seedlings and young plants from nurseries): the undergrowth is cleared, some beautiful preserved trees play the role of seed trees. The seeds grow into a shrub; gradually the "old" seed trees are eliminated to make way for the young shoots.
The Resistance
The stele, or memorial stone, erected at this crossroads takes up the Song of the Partisans, the hymn of the Resistance. It forms part of the interpretation trail that partially intersects this hike. During the Second World War, in July 1943, 60 to 80 resistance fighters belonging to Vincent Faïta's group (communist resistance fighters of Italian origin) hid in this forest. Sheltered in simple huts made of branches, they came to take refuge there between two ambushes intended to slow down the German advance.

14.5 km from Ussel, take the D982 to reach the village of Saint-Rémy.
Ambiance
Discover one of the Millevaches Regional Natural Park's iconic forests, the Mirambel forest. It is, in fact, one of the ancient forests. It is a place to enjoy during all four seasons; the atmosphere changes throughout the year, due to the presence of hardwoods. Spring is a real favourite, with the view of the snow-covered volcanoes of Auvergne.
