Explore Majestic Abbeys on Horseback: A Scenic Tour

Dive into a realm where history and nature intertwine, courtesy of the Grand Roissy Tourist Office. This unique equestrian journey breathes life into the tranquil heart of the PNR Oise-Pays de France. Imagine trotting through verdant forests and quaint villages, with the majestic architecture of ancient abbeys unfolding before you. Every step takes you through paths once trekked by the storied figures of the Middle Ages, offering a serene escape into nature's embrace. This itinerary is an ode to the enduring bond between humans and horses, inviting you to explore the serene landscapes and historical depths of this enchanting region.

Essential Itinerary Insights

Stretching over 28.3 kilometers, the journey initiates from the magnificent Abbaye de Royaumont, guided by a gentle rise to 131 meters above sea level at its apex. The route presents a cumulative ascent of 13129 meters, a detail that highlights the undulating terrain adventurers will encounter. This technical footprint suggests a moderately challenging ride, beckoning experienced riders while still being accessible for novices adept at handling their steeds over continuous climbs and descents.

Seasonal Strategies and Safety

Embracing the changing seasons enriches this equestrian adventure. Spring and autumn cloak the landscape in spectacular hues, making them ideal for your journey. However, these seasons also demand preparation for unpredictable weather. Ensure you and your horse are equipped with the essentials for varying climates, including rain gear and extra layers. Summer offers longer days, yet it's crucial to avoid the midday sun. Regardless of when you saddle up, always prioritize safety by staying on marked trails and respecting the tranquil environment shared with local wildlife.

A Deep Dive into Regional Lore

The journey from Abbaye de Royaumont to the surrounding countryside unfolds within the legendary region of Île-de-France, a land steeped in history. This area, particularly Asnières-sur-Oise and its neighbors, has been a focal point of cultural and historical significance for centuries. The monastic libraries once housed within these abbeys contributed vastly to the intellectual renaissance of the Middle Ages. Moreover, the local terrains have hosted countless figures of historical prominence, offering a palpable sense of connection to the past for those who traverse these ancient paths today.

Climate Overview and Travel Tips

The Île-de-France region enjoys a temperate climate, marked by mild winters and warm summers. The most pleasant conditions for horseback riding emerge from late April to early June and from September to October, when the weather is generally mild and the natural scenery is at its most vibrant. Rainfall is steady throughout the year, hence preparing for wet conditions is wise. To fully appreciate the region's beauty and the historical significance of its landmarks, planning your visit during these transitional seasons is recommended for an optimal experience.

Royaumont - abbey & fondation

In 1228, Saint Louis and his mother Blanche de Castille established the Abbey of Royaumont, today still the largest Cistercian abbey of Ile-de-France. Listed as a historical monument, the abbey has one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic refectory in France. The 7 hectares park, crossed by canals, is labelled "Remarkable garden" by the French Minister of Culture. It has conserved some of its medieval features and today has three gardens: an experimental vegetable garden, opened in 2014, a medieval inspiration garden, and the garden of the monastery transformed into a ravishing French garden in 1912. The abbey is open every day, from 10 am to 6 pm (5:30 pm between November and March). Royaumont Abbey also offers guided visits, heritage and garden activities for children and families every Sunday throughout the year, and holds a music and dance Festival every year in September and October. In 1228, Saint Louis and his mother Blanche de Castille established the Abbey of Royaumont, today still the largest Cistercian abbey of Ile-de-France.
