The Giffre loop

The viaduct of Mieussy was built in 1931, it is 126 meters long, and has a central 24 meters arc. The maximal height is 20 meters. Before, it allowed the passage of a train connecting Annemasse and six.In 1891, a railroad line was opened between Annemasse and Samoëns, serving most of the valley's communes. At the time, the 49-kilometer route could be covered in three hours by steam streetcar, twice as fast as by stagecoach. In 1933, the line was electrified and extended as far as Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, providing a complete service to the valley. This modernization led to a significant increase in ridership. In winter, the line was used extensively by the people of Geneva, who could take it from Annemasse to reach the mountains and even go skiing. Railway workers were faced with tough working conditions to clear the snow from the tracks. Despite this, in 1946 the section between Saint-Jeoire and Marignier was closed, and ridership continued to fall over the years. In 1959, the line finally closed for good, as the work required to renovate it could not be financed. Since then, the line has been operated by bus. At Mieussy, a 126-meter-long viaduct built in 1931 remains. Forbidden to motorized vehicles, it can only be used on foot or by bicycle.

This small lake in the village of Flérier is the ideal spot for family picnics, with a dining area and fishing facilities. Hikers can also make a shady stop here, as two hiking trails pass through the lake.With a depth of 6 meters, this lake is an EDF electric reservoir. Anglers need a 1st category fishing permit, available from the Tourist Office. The lake is located on a hiking trail, in the village of Flérier, one of the most beautiful hamlets in Taninges.

Stroll in the old village of Taninges and discover a whole built heritage (XVIth - XIXth century) around the marketplace : fountain, old houses, arches, chapel and old bridge above Foron.Taninges, well situated between Annemasse & Sixt and Cluses & Thonon, knew for ages an intense business development. The village, formerly settled in the hamlet of Flérier, moved and got organized around the marketplace, it is unchanged since 1730. To discover : Saint Anne chapel, old houses, old bridge in hogback, and St Jean Baptiste church.

In the 18th c. Joachim de la Grange, Comte de Taninges et de Flérier, built a vast château on the heights of Taninges.A century later, Laurent Marie Humbert, a Jacquemard who had left to make his fortune in Paris, returned to his origins and, in the image of his fortune and his dreams, built a building and its outbuildings on 1400 m2 of land. The house features all the comforts of the time. The "Clos du Chalet" was completed in 1857 and dominated the town of Taninges until 1995. All that remains of this former splendor are the memories.

It is located in the woods at an altitude of 850m, above Matringes. The chapel is dedicated to the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph, and to Saint Grat. Saint Grat, bishop of Aosta in the 5th century, is highly venerated by farmers.In the past, not a month went by in Savoy without a procession, mass or invocation to this saint. Indeed, the peasants believed that the air could be unhealthy at the beginning of spring. Saint Grat was therefore prayed to to ward off insects and animals harmful to crops, particularly chafer beetles, grasshoppers and rats. The chapel was founded on April 24, 1697. It suffered the same fate as other religious buildings, being partially destroyed and abandoned during the French Revolution. Thanks to the faith and courage of Joseph Gaudin and his wife Marie Humbert, the chapel was renovated in 1865. They rebuilt the chapel and its interior decorations at their own expense. In the past, when dark clouds heralding storms covered the ridges of Le Môle, the bell of the Chapelle Saint Grat was rung. The chapel was also visited on June 22 to protect crops from insects.

A monumental church by its size but also by its history !Built between 1824 and 1834 by the architect Prosper Dunant, the St Jean-Baptiste church is from the last architectural style of the States of Savoy : neo-classic Sardinian. Before, it was the biggest of the diocese of Annecy : 58 m length, 27 m wide and 18 m height. The facade of the building looks austere with few ornaments, but inside there is a profusion of decoration : paintings on the vault and pillars, stalls, carved wood and multicolored stained glasses. The visitor will visit a religious building and will discover how the jacquemarde population was decorating its churches there during the XIXth century.
