The Hettange-Grande National Natural Geological Reserve is one of eleven geological reserves in France and the only one in Lorraine. In the protected setting of an old quarry, an educational trail has been marked out, with some fifteen information panels on geology, botany and pedology. And, to complete the walk, you can find additional information at the Maison de l’Hettangien centre.
The National Natural Reserve of Hettange-Grande was created in 1985 in order to protect a unversal geological heritage site. Thanks to the many 200 million-year-old fossils discovered on the site, it was selected to be the world reference for the early Jurassic Era. The site is also a protected area for many animals, birds, reptiles, bats and insects. This site is open to visitors providing the rules are followed. The information from the visitors' center, the learning tours organised by environment educators, and the discovery trail are all easy ways to get to know our heritage.
The chapel, part of which dates to the fifteenth century, is the oldest construction in Hettange-Grande. The nave and bell tower were rebuilt circa 1660. The sanctuary houses a statue of Virgin Mary to protect newborn babies.
