It is amazing how abundant in nature Chimay is. Birdsong accompanies you everywhere you walk in this natural environment dotted with large expanses of wetlands and positively teeming with flora and fauna.
As you start to move away from Virelles, the wetlands touch on the edge of the large forest. Both of these environments co-exist allowing the fauna to develop and live in peace. On these paths through the great woods of Chimay, you tread limestone soil, which nurtures a very varied flora. In the second loop, the ride takes you to a place called "La Filature" where a forge was located in the 19th century at the entrance to the village of Lompret. Via a pretty path, you reach the bottom of the hamlet called Vaulx, a magical place where soft water (“L’Eau Blanche” river) flows lazily across the meadow. Streams, clearings, wetlands and mixed forests bring biodiversity to the valley.
During this hike, you follow a section of the “Trappist Abbeys” GR Trail.
