Jean Petit hiking loop

Description

Around the “Greenway” joining Castres and Albi, the Jean-Petit loop is a wonderful getaway in the Lautrécois hills.

Landscapes all rounded, shaped by valleys, where paths cross the hillsides, flow at the foot of the slopes or prance among the fields.
Along the path there are charming hamlets which compete with Occitan sounds... Cantegrel, Magrepeyre, Bouyssou, Borie Blanque, l'Entraye... Each of them, won over by the modern pavilions, reveals no less beautiful buildings of old stones cut from sandstone.
Wash houses, bread ovens, dovecotes compete in charm and the small chapel of Saint Nazaire is a highlight on the route.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

1. From the car park, take the greenway (old railway) direction Lautrec (north direction). Follow this track for 1 km to a bridge.
2. Immediately after this bridge, leave the old railway line to climb the embankment on the left by a path and cross the bridge. At the exit of the bridge, take immediately to the right the grassy path. Arrived at the road (cross), take right for 50m. At the crossroads turn left and take the path that descends in the valley (beautiful views of the Black Mountain). Jump the stream by the footbridge and follow the path that leads to the hamlet Jean-Petit. Discover on the left, at the entrance of the hamlet, a washhouse (lavoir). Cross the village by taking the small road opposite.
3. At the crossroads (chemin de la Jonquière) enter the small path opposite. At the next intersection, go down to the right the path along a shed then turn left the path joining the hamlet of Bouyssou. Arrived at the farm buildings, turn left on the road that goes up. At the next intersection, turn right on the road (chemin de Saint-Nazaire) which leads to the hamlet.
4. At the crossroads of the Virgin, take the time to discover the Saint-Nazaire Church 100m on the left (water point in the cemetery). At the crossroads of the virgin, turn right then immediately left before continuing left on a path that descends to the old railway.
5. When you arrive at the greenway, take it from the right for about 80m, then take the path on the left that goes up through fields. The path becomes a small road at the Entraye. Continue straight on this road until Mandoul.
6. 300m after the castle, take the grassy path on the right. View of a dovecote on the right. At the next intersection turn left the path that bypasses the property. At the crossroads of paths turn left the path that, through fields and crops leads you along the old railway and to your starting point.
