From Sarrance, a major center of Christianity as well as of the ancient Pyrenean religion? You follow the Aspe Valley, initially along the right bank, to bypass the Mail de Couret (a mountain trail with a vertical path featuring a handrail), which opens up, just as suddenly, into the vast expanse—a breath of fresh air amidst these mountains—that is the Bedous plain. From Escot onward, the path becomes a “classic” mountain trail with narrow paths and occasional steep drop-offs overlooking the Gave. Arriving in the small village of Borce with its breathtaking view of the valley is soothing. Don’t forget to stop at the Auberge de l’Ours to refuel or stock up on supplies.
