Groix - Boucle (loop) 5 Pen Men

With its covered market and shops, the town merits a wander through its coloured streets.  The parish church, devoted to the Breton saint Tudy, dates from the 17th century and was considerably renovated in around 1850. The top of the bell tower sports a tuna-shaped wind vane, marking the influence of tuna fishing on the island. Numerous ex-votos, in the form of suspended model tunnyboats, are also exhibited. The war memorial with its navy fusilier and 174 names engraved on it is a reminder of the heavy price paid by the islanders in the Great War.

At the initiative of its rector, the presbytery of Groix, built in 1725, is being restored. It will soon be home to families groisillonnes and vacationers.

Clochers, moulins ou hautes maisons pouvaient également avoir cette fonction.

A defensive post in the bay of Lorient, Groix still has some ruins from the Second World War.

The construction of the current lighthouse began in 1839, lightning had struck a few decades earlier the first building located not far from the current lighthouse. It is the most powerful in all of Morbihan, illuminating up to 29 miles or 54 kilometers. The entire building (engine rooms, radio beacon) as well as the annex buildings such as the caretaker’s house and the enclosure are listed as historical monuments.

La Réserve naturelle géologique et ornithologique François Le Bail, with an area of 99 hectares was created in 1982. The southeastern part, from Pointe des Chats to Loqueltas, is devoted to geology and protection of rocks and minerals. The western part, which runs from Pen Men to Beg Melen, aims at protecting colonies of nesting seabirds. The reserve also aims to manage and conserve sea lawns and moors. The Beg Melen (meaning yellow mouth) semaphore was built in 1864. Owned by the French Navy and off-limits to the public, it is now a monitoring station, particularly for the weather, since it transmits weather reports 24 hours a day.

The Fort du Bas Grognon auxiliary battery was built at the end of the 19th century to monitor the coastline around the bay of Lorient. Its guardhouse is equipped with firing slots.

The Fort du Bas Grognon was built in 1744 and modified in the 19th century to defend Groix and monitor the bay of Lorient and its coastline. During the Second World War, the Germans installed wooden dummy cannons and a searchlight combined with light anti-aircraft guns. It now belongs to the Conservatoire du Littoral.

In recent years, mussel farming has developed on this site, producing Groix mussels.

Port Lay was built in the 19th century, with the first jetty in 1832. A cannery operated here between 1864 and 1952. The site was also home to France's first fishing school between 1895 and 1951. The port is still active, and the site hosts the annual Groix International Festival of Island Film (FIFIG) at the end of August.

There are several local producers in Groix. The Gripp area is home to the Groix Nature canning factory and the “La Bière de Groix” brewery.

With an “Italianate” facade, this cinema was built in the 1930s. Before its construction, films were shown in cafés, and then in a hangar in Port Tudy.
