Les terrasses de la Dore

Description

From the exceptional site of Notre-Dame-de-la-Roche, the Dore gorges, the magical lights and the chapel, this circuit passes from one side of the Dore to the other, with beautiful views over Mayres, the Dore valley and the Forez mountains.

Location complements

From the town of Arlanc, take the D907 towards Saint-Alyre d'Arlanc. After 4km, turn right onto the D38 towards Mayres.

Reception complements

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

1/ From the parking lot, take the track leading downhill, then pass under the railroad line and descend to the road. Turn right, then after the last house on Le Merle, follow the track to the right for 300 m. Take the first track on the left, rising steeply. Take the left-hand track on the hillside for about a kilometer. At the road, turn right through Compains.

2/ On leaving Compains, take the left-hand track. Continue along the same path. At the road, turn left towards La Marcherie. Cross the hamlet and continue to the D201 (view of the Arlanc plain and Forez mountains). Cross the D201 and take the path down to the left (view of Mayres, the Arlanc plain and the Forez mountains). In Mas Marchet, follow the D201 to the right and cross the hamlet.

3/ At the last house, turn left down the track. At the crow's-foot, keep right until you reach the D906a. Turn left for 10 m, cross the road and take the path immediately to the right. Cross the stream, then follow the forest track to the left (view of the Forez mountains). At the road, continue straight ahead into Cubelles. Cross the hamlet and keep to the same road.

4/ 150 m further on, turn left into Les Combaux. At the entrance to the hamlet, take the left-hand path. At the crow's-foot, keep right to reach the Gardaillat ruins. Follow this path down to the Dore. Cross the Varre bridge and follow this path up to the Procureur.

5/ Cross the D38 and the railroad line and, 30 m further on, climb up towards Le Besset (view of the Arlanc plain and Forez mountains). In Le Besset, continue straight ahead on the same road. At the D38, turn right and, 250 m further on, follow the path to the right. Cross the wood and rejoin the D38. Take the track opposite for 100 m, then go left along the field to reach the chapel.
