ETAPE01-TOULOUSE - RIEUMES - TOUR DE LA HAUTE-GARONNE A VELO

Description

This first stage takes you gradually out of the Toulouse conurbation and into more open, rural countryside. The route alternates between urban sections, small secondary roads and the first villages, ideal for food and refreshment breaks.

The route starts in the heart of the "Pink City", between its monumental heritage and the banks of the Garonne, before gradually escaping into the hills of the Savès. A gentle warm-up stage, taking in the scenery of the Garonne plain before the first undulations.
Architecture & heritage
- Toulouse - A symbolic start from the Place du Capitole or the quays of the Garonne; Pont-Neuf, Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques, Jacobins convent.
- Villages in south-western Toulouse: La Salvetat Saint Gilles, Fontenilles, Saint-Lys with its octagonal market hall and radio museum.
- Rieumes - XIIIᵉ century bastide: covered market, timber-framed houses, church with its characteristic bell tower-wall.
Landscapes
- Banks of the Garonne, gravel pits and wetlands, lines of plane trees.
- Open, hedged hillsides of the Savès, with views of the Pyrenees on a clear day.
Stops
- Saint-Lys: Tuesday morning market
- In Fontenilles: Sunday morning market
- In Rieumes: local producers of duck, ewe's milk cheese and honey.
Photo tips
- Sunrise over the Garonne in Toulouse (reflections of the Pont-Neuf).
- View of the plane tree lanes in Rieumes at the end of the stage.

The route takes in roads open to traffic. There will be crossings and junctions, as well as stretches with varying degrees of traffic. For everyone's safety, it's essential to obey the Highway Code and keep an eye out for other road users.

OASIS DE POUL'ART - CAMPING LA FORET

In a soothing natural setting, enjoy a comfortable pitch (250 m²) close to the forest in an old orchard. The Poul'Art campsite welcomes visitors and holidaymakers for varying lengths of time. We try to respond to every request as best we can by keeping a reception schedule that tries to meet different needs. The concept of the campsite is based on ecology and quality of life. Rather than get rid of these old, very vintage bungalows, we've decided to keep them and convert them into eco-friendly accommodation. We're just at the beginning of a process that will involve optimising the various components of a functional, low-energy habitat, where we're relearning to live in happy simplicity. Yurts are being added to the accommodation structure (traditional yurts, contemporary yurts, etc.) and over time we are looking into the possibility of extending the potential for discovering other light habitats by diversifying the types of accommodation (caravan, tinyhouse, etc.). Campsite residents enjoy a friendly, meaningful atmosphere in the midst of nature, in the company of farm animals. They have access to the restaurant, the reading café, the media library, the games library, the organic shop, the co-working area, the yoga room, the outdoor games area and, on request, to treatments and massages. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walks, particularly along the municipal footpath that runs alongside the River Bure. A relaxation area in the forest is currently being developed. Guests can take part in the life of the oasis by signing up for workshops run by local professionals. The Poul'Art campsite is an ideal place to organise meetings, seminars, gatherings, events, etc. Reservations must be made several months in advance.
