Angesichts der Bedrohung ihrer Ländereien durch Bigorre schloss die Vicomtesse Marguerite de Béarn einen Pachtvertrag mit Arnaud Guilhem, dem Abt von St Pé de Bigorre, ab, der ihr gleiche Rechte und Besitzungen zusicherte. Aus diesem politischen Akt entstand 1308 eine neue Stadt zwischen Béarn und Bigorre, eine Bastide namens Montaut, die die wirtschaftliche und demografische Entwicklung der Region vorantreiben sollte. Der gewählte Ort, der vor Hochwasser geschützt war, war der Mons Altus, der Hohe Berg, der später zu : Montaut. Die großen Wälder und der kalkreiche Untergrund ermöglichten den Bau von Kalköfen, die die damaligen und zukünftigen Bauwerke weitgehend versorgten.
